Assistant Field Engineer (Hourly)

Job Summary

Holder Construction is seeking a full-time Assistant Field Engineer to support operations on a Richmond, Virginia project. The role combines construction layout, field engineering coordination, and oversight of layout crew activities.

Responsibilities

• Establish and maintain vertical and horizontal project control.
• Coordinate field engineering and layout work using surveying equipment.
• Provide timely, accurate layout for construction activities and verify tolerances for foundations, anchor bolts, embeds, slabs, walls, and related work.
• Work with field crews, project staff, and trade partners to coordinate activities and resolve layout issues.

Required Experience

• Previous experience leading construction layout crews.
• Proficiency with total stations, site levels, lasers, data collectors, and tablets.
• Working knowledge of structural, architectural, civil, and shop drawings.
• Basic AutoCAD and Bluebeam knowledge, along with familiarity with layout methods and building constructability.
• Ability to perform construction-related math, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, unit conversions, and concrete quantity calculations.
• Reliable transportation, strong communication and time-management skills, and standard computer proficiency.
• Availability for overtime and weekend work, willingness to travel, and ability to work in an OSHA-compliant environment.
• Ability to work outdoors, navigate uneven surfaces and heights, climb ladders or scaffolds, and carry layout equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.
