Job Summary

Kiewit Power Engineering Group is seeking a mid-level Commissioning Engineer to support electrical commissioning from estimating and design through construction, startup, and project completion. The position is based in Lenexa, Kansas, with opportunities to support projects across North America.

Project Details

The engineering group delivers power and infrastructure projects using an EPC model, including gas-fired generation, power delivery, environmental retrofits, renewable energy, and water/wastewater facilities.

Responsibilities

• Review electrical designs and commissioning requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
• Participate in project meetings, factory acceptance testing, and commissioning reviews.
• Prepare equipment checklists, commissioning procedures, electrical testing specifications, startup philosophies, and presentation materials.
• Develop initial energization procedures for switchyards, back-feed systems, switchgear, and synchronization activities.
• Travel to project sites to audit work, review energization plans, and support major startup milestones.
• Coordinate with commissioning technical specialists and onsite startup teams.

Required Experience

• At least two years of related experience with power plants, substations, or renewable energy projects.
• Working knowledge of protective relays, electrical controls, and protection schemes.
• Familiarity with NETA and IEEE testing standards.
• Knowledge of NFPA 70E and the ability to troubleshoot electrical systems safely.
• Experience with medium- and low-voltage switchgear, MCCs, transformers, breakers, generator circuit breakers, instrument transformers, and electrical schematics is advantageous.
• Reliable attendance, effective communication, deadline management, and willingness to work overtime or weekends when required.
