Job Summary

Kiewit Power Delivery Engineering is seeking a mid-level Protection and Control Engineer to design reliable protection, control, and automation systems for utility substation projects. The position may be based in Portland, Oregon, or Salt Lake City, Utah.

Project Details

Support greenfield and brownfield substations ranging from 12 kV to 500 kV within Kiewit's transmission and distribution practice. Projects support electric utilities, renewable energy, industrial, and oil and gas markets.

Responsibilities

  • Develop one-line, three-line, AC, and DC diagrams covering protection philosophy, controls, metering, tripping, and auxiliary power.
  • Prepare wiring, panel layout, interconnection, relay, RTU, and station equipment drawings.
  • Complete CT/PT sizing, DC load, breaker duty, and protection coordination calculations.
  • Support relay settings, logic and configuration files, RTU/SCADA point lists, and communications interfaces.
  • Coordinate with civil, structural, and physical electrical design teams and provide technical support through procurement, installation, testing, and commissioning.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Five to seven years of substation protection and control design experience on utility or EPC projects.
  • Experience with relay setting software such as SEL AcSELerator or GE Enervista and RTU/SCADA configuration tools.
  • Knowledge of NERC, IEEE, and utility-specific protection standards.
  • Ability to interpret complex electrical drawings, communicate professionally, meet deadlines, and work safely, including overtime or weekends when needed.
