Job Summary
Black & Veatch is seeking an Associate Instrumentation & Controls Engineer to support hydropower and power generation projects from its Overland Park, Kansas office. The role sits within the global I&C department and operates under general supervision, with growing responsibility across detailed design and technical deliverables.
Project Details
Work focuses on hydropower facilities and Balance of Plant systems, including control system upgrades, governor conversions, instrumentation, and network communications for generating units, plant systems, and spillways.
Responsibilities
- Prepare network block diagrams covering unit and plant controllers, operator workstations, protective relays, metering, RTACs, and communication interfaces.
- Develop I/O lists, network communication signal lists, and protocol requirements for electrical protective relays and metering.
- Write specifications for control systems, network communications, and mechanical-to-digital governor conversions.
- Prepare operational descriptions identifying local and remote monitoring and control requirements.
- Produce Piping & Instrument Diagrams coordinating with mechanical engineers and adding control system interfaces.
- Develop instrument lists, schematics, elementary diagrams, field wiring diagrams, and cable and conduit schedules.
- Conduct onsite condition assessments of existing control systems and instrumentation and identify upgrade requirements.
- Prepare startup procedures and review vendor test procedures and submittals.
- Mentor entry-level professionals and interns and coordinate with project leadership and cross-discipline teams.
Required Experience
- Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program.
- Minimum 1 year of related work experience in instrumentation and controls or a related engineering discipline.
- Ability to complete pre-employment screening including background check and drug screen.
