Job Summary
Black & Veatch is hiring a Project Engineering Manager – Substation to lead multi-discipline engineering teams on complex substation and switchyard EPC and design-services projects. This is a full-time, hybrid-eligible role based in Overland Park, Kansas, with an employee-owned company ranked #4 in Power by Engineering News-Record (2025).
Project Details
Work centers on the Technology, Commercial & Industrial group, supporting substations, renewables integration, HVDC/FACTS/STATCOM, data center integration, and BESS integration for investor-owned utilities and advanced-technology clients across the U.S.
Responsibilities
- Lead multi-discipline teams of engineers and technicians to deliver complex substation engineering packages.
- Develop and manage project budgets, schedules, and quality requirements across multiple disciplines.
- Serve as responsible charge for projects and coordinate activities across all design disciplines.
- Identify client interests and drivers, communicate concerns internally, and manage project changes under PM supervision.
- Support business development, proposals, and client relationship growth.
- Review lower-level engineering work and manage hiring, discipline, and pay administration for direct reports.
Required Experience
- Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program.
- Minimum 5 years of related engineering experience.
- Experience managing EPC or design-services substation and switchyard projects for investor-owned utilities in the U.S.
- Strong knowledge of substation layout, relay protection & control, civil/structural design, and major substation equipment.
- Familiarity with procurement processes, contract administration, and proposal development.
- P.E. license highly preferred; professional registration or active pursuit required per division policy.
