Project Engineering Manager Underground Transmission Line

Job Summary

Black & Veatch is hiring a Project Engineering Manager to lead underground transmission line design and EPC programs from its Overland Park, Kansas office. The role sits within a specialized team ranked #4 in Power by Engineering News-Record and focuses on high-voltage underground transmission projects for investor-owned utilities across the U.S.

Project Details

Work spans the full underground transmission project lifecycle — from plan and profile design through equipment specification, procurement coordination, and construction support — with exposure to substations, HVDC/FACTS, BESS integration, and data center infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Lead multi-discipline engineering teams to deliver complex underground transmission line projects on schedule and within budget.
• Prepare and oversee complex engineering deliverables, calculations, and design quality across multiple disciplines.
• Manage project budgets, schedules, and quality requirements and serve as responsible charge.
• Interface directly with clients to identify priorities, communicate concerns, and manage project changes.
• Support business development, proposals, and engineering estimates.
• Review lower-level engineering work and handle hiring and performance management for direct reports.

Required Experience

• Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program.
• Minimum 5 years of related engineering experience.
• Experience managing EPC or design services projects for underground transmission lines with investor-owned utilities preferred.
• Strong understanding of high-voltage underground transmission design and linear project lifecycle.
• Experience developing plan and profile drawings; working knowledge of CYMCAP and Pull-Planner preferred.
• Working knowledge of interdisciplinary coordination including procurement, subcontracting, permitting, and construction support.
• P.E. license highly preferred.
