Safety Manager - Transportation / Infrastructure

Job Summary

Kiewit is seeking a Safety Manager to lead field safety management for heavy civil, transportation, and water resource construction projects in Northern California. The role supports project teams, craft employees, subcontractors, and consultants while advancing the company’s safety program.

Project Details

The Northern California District delivers infrastructure work across heavy civil, transportation, power, and water resource markets. This position will be assigned to a project site in the San Francisco Bay Area or Sacramento area, with potential work elsewhere on the West Coast.

Responsibilities

• Create and administer project-specific safety plans, procedures, training, inspections, and audits.
• Identify hazards, assess field risks, and verify compliance with company standards, OSHA, EPA, and other regulations.
• Investigate incidents, near misses, and accidents; determine root causes and implement corrective actions.
• Track safety performance, maintain key performance indicators, and provide reports to project and senior leadership.
• Coordinate with regulatory agencies during inspections and audits.
• Promote safety accountability among employees, subcontractors, and project stakeholders.

Required Experience

• At least five years of construction safety management experience, preferably in heavy civil, transportation, or water resource work.
• Education in occupational health and safety, environmental science, engineering, or a related discipline may be replaced by relevant experience.
• Craft experience is strongly preferred.
• Current 30-hour OSHA construction safety training or equivalent completed within the past five years.
• CHST certification is identified in the qualifications; CSP, EM385, First Aid/CPR, EMT, and OSHA or MSHA instructor credentials are preferred.
• At least 24 hours of formal safety training annually over the past five years, including competent-person training in at least four applicable safety disciplines.
• Strong knowledge of OSHA and related safety standards, with effective communication, leadership, problem-solving, and documentation skills.
• Ability to work overtime and weekends as project requirements dictate and relocate or travel to assigned sites.

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary is $125,000-$155,000 per year, with a possible cost-of-living adjustment for employees in select Northern California locations.
