Senior Project Engineering Manager Substation

Job Summary

Black & Veatch is hiring a Senior Project Engineering Manager – Substation to lead multi-discipline engineering teams on complex substation and switchyard EPC and design-services projects. The role is based in Overland Park, Kansas, with a hybrid work schedule available after 90 days.

Project Details

The position sits within B&V's Technology, Commercial & Industrial team, supporting a fast-growing portfolio that includes substations, renewables integration, HVDC/FACTS/STATCOM, data center integration, and BESS integration for investor-owned utilities and advanced technology clients.

Responsibilities

• Lead multi-discipline teams of engineers and technicians to deliver complex substation engineering packages.
• Develop and manage project budgets, schedules, and quality requirements across multiple disciplines.
• Serve as responsible charge on projects and establish workplans for execution.
• Interface directly with clients to identify key drivers, communicate concerns, and manage project changes.
• Support business development, proposals, and engineering estimates.
• Review lower-level engineering work and manage hiring and performance for direct reports.

Required Experience

• Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program.
• Minimum 11 years of related engineering experience.
• Experience managing EPC or design-services substation and switchyard projects for investor-owned utilities in the United States.
• Strong understanding of substation project lifecycle, layout design, relay protection & control, civil/structural design, and major substation equipment.
• P.E. license highly preferred; professional registration may be required depending on assignment.
• Working knowledge of procurement processes, contract administration, and proposal development.
