Utility BESS EPC Project Director

Job Summary

Black & Veatch is seeking a Utility BESS EPC Project Director to provide executive leadership over integrated Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) solutions for technology, data center, and mission-critical clients. The Director oversees both EPC project execution and professional services delivery, leading projects that may encompass battery storage, onsite generation, renewables, substations, utility interconnections, EMS, microgrid controllers, and data center electrical infrastructure.

Project Details

Projects involve integrated BESS assets embedded within larger microgrid environments supporting mission-critical and hyperscale data center operations. The Director is responsible for the full portfolio's cost, schedule, quality, safety, and financial performance across medium to large EPC and services engagements.

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute strategic plans to grow the Integrated BESS business segment, with a focus on data center and hyperscale clients.
• Lead portfolio revenue, backlog growth, margin performance, and forecasting accuracy.
• Direct project directors and managers; coordinate engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and controls teams.
• Establish scalable execution models, proposal structures, and contracting strategies tailored to technology-sector clients.
• Lead commercial negotiations, review contract terms and risk profiles, and manage change orders, claims, and warranty matters.
• Develop and implement project recovery plans when needed and oversee subcontractor and supplier performance.
• Recruit, mentor, and develop project managers and emerging leaders; build succession planning strategies.

Required Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
• 12+ years of experience in energy infrastructure, EPC, power generation, microgrids, or related fields.
• 5+ years leading large multidisciplinary organizations or complex EPC/integrated delivery programs.
• Experience with BESS, microgrids, onsite generation, renewable integration, substations, utility interconnections, EMS, or microgrid controls.
• Experience serving hyperscale data center, technology, or mission-critical clients.
• Strong commercial, contractual, financial, and risk management acumen.

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary range of $185,361–$372,398/year, plus eligibility for a performance-based bonus. When not traveling, the role is hybrid: 3 days in-office, 2 days remote.
