Underground Transmission Engineer

Job Summary

Kiewit Power Engineering is seeking an Underground Transmission Engineer to design and support high-voltage underground power delivery projects. The role combines technical engineering, utility coordination, project execution, and construction support across North America.

Project Details

The position supports utility and EPC transmission projects involving medium- and high-voltage underground cable systems, with potential transmission voltages from 69kV through 500kV. Work may include routing, duct banks, grounding, installation, commissioning, and coordination with utilities, municipalities, contractors, vendors, and clients.

Responsibilities

• Design underground transmission lines and develop routing studies, drawings, specifications, and construction packages.
• Perform cable ampacity, voltage-drop, short-circuit, thermal, and grounding analyses.
• Coordinate engineering deliverables with clients, utilities, vendors, contractors, and internal teams.
• Support projects from conceptual design through construction, installation, energization, and commissioning.
• Review submittals and vendor drawings, provide field technical support, and participate in design reviews and planning meetings.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to design quality and process improvements.

Required Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
• At least five years of experience in underground transmission or power delivery engineering.
• Experience with medium- and high-voltage underground cable systems, cable routing, duct bank design, grounding, and installation requirements.
• Knowledge of utility transmission and distribution systems and NESC, NEC, IEEE, and utility engineering standards.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, communicate with clients, and support fast-paced project teams.
• Professional Engineer license or ability to obtain one is preferred.
• Experience with EPC transmission projects, utility clients, power-system analysis software, and AutoCAD, MicroStation, or Bentley tools is preferred.
