Job Summary

Black & Veatch is hiring an Associate Substation Structural Engineer to support structural design and analysis on substation and energy infrastructure projects from their Overland Park, Kansas office. This is an entry-to-mid-level engineering role within B&V's Technology, Commercial & Industrial team, which focuses on data centers, advanced manufacturing, gigafactories, and power infrastructure.

Project Details

Work spans substations, overhead and underground transmission lines, and renewables integration. The team is ranked #4 Overall in Power by Engineering News-Record (2025) and works on cutting-edge energy and industrial infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities

  • Perform structural analysis, calculations, and prepare drawings for substation equipment structures and foundations.
  • Assist with generating project-specific specifications and supporting the procurement process.
  • Collaborate with structural technicians on drawings and specs.
  • Support construction-phase duties including site visits, RFI responses, and contractor submittal reviews.
  • Coordinate with other discipline engineers to ensure project alignment.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program.
  • Minimum 1 year of related work experience.
  • Basic knowledge of structural engineering design principles and applicable standards.
  • Basic experience with 3D structural analysis software (RISA 3D, STAAD Pro, or equivalent).
  • Basic foundation design experience using tools such as LPile, RISA Foundation, or SP-Mats.
  • Experience with structural connection calculations using MS Excel and/or Mathcad is a plus.
  • Prior experience in energy sector design (substations, power generation, renewables) is preferred but not required.
