Electrical Project Engineer - Substation

Job Summary

Black & Veatch is seeking an Electrical Project Engineer to support high-voltage substation engineering, project coordination, and technical leadership in Arlington, Virginia. The role may serve as a technical specialist or project lead on detailed design and EPC assignments.

Project Details

Support utility substation projects ranging up to 765kV, including protection and control, physical layout, grounding, lightning protection, control buildings, and auxiliary AC/DC systems. The team also supports renewables integration, HVDC/FACTS/STATCOM, data center integration, and battery energy storage projects.

Responsibilities

• Develop and review substation electrical design packages, including relay, panel, one-line, three-line, schematic, wiring, yard, grounding, and control building deliverables.
• Prepare equipment specifications and bills of materials for procurement and construction.
• Coordinate activities with clients, vendors, subcontractors, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams.
• Manage assigned design budgets, schedules, quality requirements, and engineering deliverables.
• Provide technical guidance, review team work, mentor junior engineers, and support business development pursuits.
• Participate in design reviews, construction coordination, and field verification as needed.

Required Experience

• Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program.
• At least five years of related work experience.
• Experience with extra-high-voltage substation design at 500kV or higher is preferred.
• Project lead, technical specialist, quality review, and utility client coordination experience are preferred.
• Professional Engineer license is preferred.
• Proficiency with Bluebeam Revu and Microsoft Office applications is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Annual compensation is $131,352-$219,360. Flexible or hybrid work options may be available after the first 90 days, and a performance-based bonus may be offered.
