Senior Project Engineer

Job Summary

Ames Construction is hiring a Senior Project Engineer to provide technical, cost, schedule, and field coordination support for heavy civil construction projects. The role works independently across project teams and mentors junior staff.

Project Details

Heavy civil infrastructure work is based at assigned project locations in the Ames Pacific Office region. Projects are primarily in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Orange Counties, with potential assignments elsewhere in California.

Responsibilities

• Review contracts, design documents, subcontracts, permits, RFIs, submittals, and change documentation; identify risks and support change resolution.
• Coordinate meetings and follow-up among clients, subcontractors, vendors, designers, and field teams.
• Support cost control, forecasting, quantity tracking, production analysis, and budget risk management.
• Assist field teams with constructability, work planning, issue resolution, permits, materials, and subcontractor coordination.
• Monitor schedules, identify constraints, and help develop mitigation and recovery plans.
• Mentor project and field engineering staff and support quality, safety, environmental, and closeout documentation.
• Coordinate procurement, materials, deliveries, and records for changes and potential claims.

Required Experience

• Five or more years of progressive Project Engineer experience in heavy civil construction.
• Field-related experience with earthwork, grading, concrete structures, foundations, underground utilities, or related civil infrastructure work.
• Working knowledge of project controls, document and cost control, quantity tracking, forecasting, and scheduling tools such as P6 or equivalent.
• Strong coordination, organization, communication, and mentoring skills.
• A degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related engineering discipline is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary of $125,000-$150,000 per year, with eligibility for a discretionary bonus. Benefits include ESOP participation, a 401(k) match, medical, dental, and vision coverage, voluntary benefits, company holidays, and paid time off.
