Job Summary
Black & Veatch is seeking a Utility BESS EPC Project Director to provide executive-level leadership over utility-scale battery energy storage projects, including related transmission, substation, and renewable energy infrastructure. This senior role carries full accountability for project delivery across all phases — from proposal through closeout — and requires strong commercial, financial, and stakeholder management capabilities.
Project Details
Projects span utility-scale BESS, transmission, substation, and renewable energy sectors. EPC contract structures include lump sum, EpCM, alliance, and design-build delivery models. Teams are often multi-office and geographically dispersed.
Responsibilities
- Provide overall strategic direction and executive oversight for large EPC projects from pursuit through final closeout.
- Direct and mentor Project Managers, Construction Managers, Engineering Managers, and other execution staff.
- Own full project financial performance including revenue recognition, cost control, cash flow, change management, and margin.
- Develop and execute project delivery strategies, staffing plans, and resource management plans.
- Champion a zero-incident safety culture across all project teams and locations.
- Maintain executive-level relationships with clients, major subcontractors, suppliers, and internal leadership.
- Support business development, proposal preparation, and project pursuit activities.
- Facilitate resolution of complex commercial, contractual, technical, and regulatory issues.
- Lead project recovery efforts when schedule, cost, or productivity challenges arise.
Required Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 12+ years of progressive experience managing large EPC projects in utility, power delivery, generation, or energy infrastructure.
- Demonstrated P&L accountability in senior project leadership roles.
- Experience with complex EPC contract structures including lump sum, EpCM, alliance, and design-build.
- Experience with utility-scale BESS, transmission, substation, or generation projects preferred.
- Strong skills in risk management, change management, claims avoidance, and contract administration.
- Ability to lead geographically dispersed, matrixed project teams.
Compensation and Benefits
$185,361–$372,398/year, with eligibility for a performance-based bonus.
